THE IMPACT OF SEASONALITY ON REALIZED OVERNIGHT STAYS IN THE HOTEL BUSINESS

VYARA KYUROVA

Abstract

The year-round capacity utilization is of primary importance for the hotel business. The uneven distribution of tourism demand over time as a result of seasonality, however, leads to negative consequences, such as decrease of the effectiveness of utilization of facilities, decrease of revenues from sales of services and respectively - decrease in annual profits. Some seasons or months are even marked by significant losses. That is why concrete measures should be taken to eliminate the impact of seasonality at the greatest possible degree. The impact of seasonality on the hotel business can be most evidently seen through the number of realized overnight stays.
The purpose of this paper is to study the impact of seasonality on realized overnight stays in the hotel business and reveal the possible decisions for its overcoming. With regard to this, an analysis of statistical data for the period between 2002 and 2009 has been done. As a result of the analysis, some conclusions and concrete suggestions for overcoming the negative impact of seasonality have been presented.
