FOREIGN POLICY DIMENSIONS OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY OF THE EUROPEAN UNION

 ANNA HRISTOVA

Abstract

Unlike the traditional international law, EU’s environmental policy shows some specific features. Environmental policy involves not only governmental but also non-governmental participants, who are engaged in activities in multiple regions all over the world. The ecological problems reveal in bigger degree than the economical ones the interdependence between countries and people. It is an undisputed fact that no country, no matter how powerful it is, could deal with the ecological problems alone, without any transnational cooperation. That is why, the protection of the environment has acquired foreign-political dimension. United Nations are assigned the leading part in the process of handling the global challenges, which are related to the protection of the environment on an international level. UN actively participates in general and specialized international conferences on ecological issues, which leads to the conclusion that the ecological problems, and more specifically the ones regarding the protection of the environment which are of special interest to EU, are already finding adequate solutions within UN and its specialized organizations.
